Anyone lucky enough to share a boat with Jim knew two things: he would out-fish everyone on board, and he would never let you live it down.

Jim vanDoorn passed away on November 3, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, sportsmanship, quick wit, and deep devotion to his family.

Jim was born on April 26, 1944, in Ladysmith, Wisconsin to Catherine and Cornelius vanDoorn. Jim was known for always being on the move and getting things done. Whether he was operating his bulldozer, forwarding wood or visiting the neighborhood, he was in his element being with people or being out on the land. Jim was an outstanding hunter, dedicated houndsman, and skilled fisherman. Anyone lucky enough to share a boat with Jim knew two things: he would out-fish everyone on board, and he would never let you live it down. Anyone lucky enough to share a seat with him in his truck was always fed more sweets than they could ask for and treated to many pieces of trivia Jim felt were essential to know.

Sports were one of Jim’s greatest passions. Blessed with incredible knowledge, he could recall the roster of virtually any football or baseball team at a moment’s notice, or recall memorable plays of the game. That love for the game naturally extended to the sidelines, where he served as a dedicated coach for Little League, middle school, and high school teams. He also loved playing cards, taking special joy in teaching his grandchildren how to play at a very young age. He made it a point to never miss a game when it came to supporting his children, grandchildren, or area athletes. He was always generous with his wisdom, never hesitating to offer a helpful tip to any young athlete he watched.

Above all, Jim brought joy, energy, and laughter wherever he went. He loved to joke, tease, and poke fun, and no one was immune to his playful spirit. His fun-loving side shone through in every aspect of his life, leaving those around him with countless fond memories and stories to share.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Cindy; his children, Jeff (Michele) vanDoorn of Ladysmith, Tom (Heather) vanDoorn of Glen Flora, and Chris (Mike) Soltis of Glen Flora; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jodi Prock.

Jim will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched.

There will be a memorial service at Glen Flora Lutheran Church at 11:00 am Saturday, November 7th, with Rev. Glenn Sokolowski officiating, with a visitation/celebration to follow at the Tony Event Center.

A complete obituary will also be published in the Ladysmith News.
