It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Waunita Leitz DesJarlais, aged 92, on June 18, 2026, in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, after a brief illness.
Born on August 6, 1933, in Clinton Township, Iowa, Waunita was the beloved daughter of Louis Simon Leitz and Georgia June Leitz. Waunita's journey through life was marked by vibrant enthusiasm and a nurturing spirit. After graduating from Bruce High School in Bruce, Wisconsin, she embarked on a career that showcased her dedication and warmth, first as a telephone operator for the Ladysmith Telephone Company and later as a cherished sales representative for Ruby's Dress Shop, where she worked from 1965 until her retirement in 2011.
On November 24, 1951, Waunita married the love of her life, Donald (Don) DesJarlais, Jr., embarking on a union that would bless them with a beautiful family. Although Don predeceased her, their legacy of love endures through their children: Terry (Mary), Guy, Mark, Mike (Mary Jo), Cindy (Randy) Smrstick, Todd (Kris), and Chagua (Mike) Mize.
Waunita is survived by her brother, Lloyd (Sylvia) Leitz. Besides her parents she is predeceased by her husband Don and siblings, Bob (Annabelle) Leitz, Dave (Dorothy) Leitz, Val Leitz, her in-laws Don, Sr. and Frances and daughter-in-law Betty DesJarlais.
Her cherished role as a grandmother to 13 grandchildren, to 15 great-grandchildren, and to 5 great-great-grandchildren brought immense joy to her life and will be fondly remembered by all who were touched by her warmth and love.
An ardent sports enthusiast, Waunita was a loyal supporter of the Ladysmith High School sports teams, the Milwaukee Braves, and the Green Bay Packers. Her passion for sports extended to her active participation in local golf and bowling leagues, where she created lasting memories and friendships. Waunita's zest for life was evident in her love for adventure, particularly her fondness for visiting Las Vegas and local casinos. Her vibrant spirit and infectious laughter were a hallmark of her personality, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. Special love and thanks to Wendy DesJarlais and Janet Effertz.
Mass of Christian Burial to honor Waunita's life will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Ladysmith, with visitation from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. Fellowship will follow, after interment at Riverside Cemetery, at JS Supper Club.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Marshfield Medical Center in Ladysmith, the VitaCare Living Center, St. Croix Hospice and Rusk County Ambulance for their unwavering support and care during Waunita's final days. The family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Waunita's memory.
Her legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to her family will forever be cherished and celebrated by all who knew her. Rest in peace, dear Waunita, in the embrace of eternal love and joy.
